And that’s how it all started! A new research project, an original idea that would illuminate the invisible aspects of media representations of the refugee and immigration crisis. Above all, an idea through which the media effects on intergroup relationships between Greeks and migrants/refugees would enter our research microscope in order to discover its structural core, the cracks, attitudes and perceptions of each side that encountered in the context of the so called refugee and immigration crisis. We have already known that we have chosen a difficult path, but as a team we felt that we have an internal need to uncover what causes these cracks and how could they heal. We have the desire to bring the people to the centre of our research horizon, to let them unroll the tangle of their stories, to share their feelings when they saw their lives to be on the headlines of the newspapers. But before we turn to the protagonists themselves, our first goal is to focus on the pivotal shaper of this relationship, the media. So in order to catch the pulse of the immigration and refugee crisis, we have to unite step by step the pieces of the puzzle and map the representation in the media. But in which media? Which period? Based on what criteria would the media be selected? This is only a taste of the questions that opened the agenda of our meeting. The brainstorming of the group started with a lot of inspiration and accompanied with the aromatic coffee of Mr. George who keeps the tradition in serving coffee in Thessaloniki. And this is my first post as a researcher!
